At the time of his death every thing was arranged with the king of Benin for his departure; and there is no doubt he would have succeeded. He passed with the king and nobles for a native of the interior, who had been in England since his youth, and was then returning home; and wore a Moorish dress, and a beard a foot long. The distance from Benin to Houssa is about 25 days' journey. His guard was to have left him at the latter place, whence he was to have proceeded to Timbuctoo by himself. 4.
